CONFERENCE PROGRAM

AVALON 2017, the Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition, will feature a comprehensive program of international conferences, seminars and symposia, including the prestigious Air Chiefs Symposium and the Australian International Aerospace Congress.

The 2017 Australian International Airshow is a major and significant aviation event for Australia, Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. Exhibitors, participants and attendees from across the world represent the very best of commercial, civil and military aviation.

In recognition of the impact of the Airshow on the more general aviation community, there are numerous specialist conferences, meetings and symposia convened in conjunction with the 2017 Airshow, on-site at Avalon Airport in the purpose-built Conference Centre.

AEROSPACE ENVIRONMENT WORKING GROUP (AEWG) SYMPOSIUM

Location: Airshow Conference Centre

The Aerospace Environment Working Group (AEWG) symposium is hosted by the Director General Modernisation Branch, Air Force Headquarters (AFHQ) and an Industry Co-Chair.

The aim of the AEWG is to provide a forum for Defence to update industry on aerospace projects, and the opportunity for Australian and international aerospace industry members to provide industry considerations on future capability. Mutual discussions allow Defence to test the strength of its capability proposals with industry without prejudice.

This will be a full day AAA meeting convened by the Victorian Division. The AAA is a non-profit organisation founded in 1982 and represents the interests of over 270 airports Australia-wide from the local country community landing strips to the major international gateway airports.

AAUS is back at the Australian International Airshow in 2017 hosting the “Transforming Australia with Drone Technology” conference.

This year’s event will focus on the growth and utility of unmanned aerial systems for both military and civilian applications.

The event will be held at RMIT University, Melbourne CBD and at Avalon over 3 days (February 26 - 28, 2017).

The ABAA is a non-profit organisation, originally established some years ago as the Australian Business Aircraft Association, to act as a collective voice for the business aviation community in Australia, and to assist its members in all aviation-related matters.

Location: Innovation Theatrette, Exhibition Hall 1

The winners of the 2017 Aerospace Australia Limited Industry Innovation Awards will be announced at Avalon 2017 at 4.15pm on Wednesday 1 March at the Innovation Theatrette located at the southern end of Exhibition Hall 1. The winners will be presented with their awards by the Chairman of Aerospace Australia Limited, Air Marshal (retired) Geoff Shepherd AO. All exhibitors and Trade visitors are welcome to attend.

A dedicated Innovation Awards Showcase adjacent to the Innovation Theatrette will highlight the shortlisted contenders for these awards so that potential partners, customers and sources of project finance can contact the contenders direct.

Six awards will be presented in total for the following categories:

  • Defence Industry National Innovation Award
  • Civil Industry National Innovation Award
  • Defence Industry SME Innovation Grant
  • Civil Industry SME Innovation Grant
  • Young Innovator Scholarship for Defence Industry
  • Young Innovator Scholarship for Civil Industry


The SME Innovation Grants are worth $10,000 each, as are the Young Innovator Scholarships. The winners of the National Defence and Civil Industry Innovation Awards will be presented with trophies.

US Comparative Technology Office (CTO) Industry Briefing

Officials from the US Department of Defense’s Comparative Technology Office (CTO) will hold an industry briefing at Avalon 2017. The CTO’s Foreign Comparative Test Program aims to test equipment and technologies developed by allies such as Australia that have Technology Readiness Level (TRL 5-9) in order to satisfy Pentagon defense requirements more quickly and economically. After the briefing CTO officials will hold a series of one on one meetings with Australian companies, particularly SMEs, at Avalon 2017.
