Leaders from Defence Science and Technology's Aerospace Division and Next Generation Technologies Fund will provide an overview of research focus areas in 2019 and examples of engagement in action.  A workshop will be held involving DST, industry and academic leaders, providing an opportunity to discuss practical issues.


Dr Todd Mansell
Dr Todd Mansell is the acting Chief Defence Scientist.He is a career scientist, a leader within Australia's Department of Defence and an Adjunct Professor with the University of South Australia. During his 29 year career within defence, Dr Mansell has been First Assistant Secretary – Strategic Policy and Intelligence Initiatives in Strategic Policy and Intelligence Group and Chief of Joint and Operations Analysis Division where he led the scientific analysis supporting the Defence White Paper 2016 and shaped the development of the new Defence Innovation System.

He was also Chief of Air Operations Division, where he was responsible for S&T support to major programs including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Growler, and ADF helicopter programs and Research Leader responsible for the S&T in support of Australia's submarine and warship programs.

Dr Dong Yang Wu
Dr Dong Yang Wu is Chief of the Aerospace Division at DST. She leads the work of over 300 scientists, engineers and technicians who undertake science and technology work to support the operation of Defence's fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Previously she worked with Boeing China heading up it's R & T program and before that Dr Wu spent 17 years with the CSIRO.

Jan Drobik 
Jan Drobik is Program Leader, Innovation, Defence Science and Technology. He previously represented DST at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC and before that he was Research Leader, of DST’s Land Vehicles and Systems Branch.

Felica Pradera
Felica Pradera is the Program Leader of DST’s Medical Countermeasures program.

Dr Nick Beagley
Dr Nick Beagley is the Program Lead of  Enhanced Human Performance with the Next Generation Technologies Fund. He is with the Land Human Systems section of DST's Land Division in Fishermans Bend.

Dr Mark Krieg
Dr Krieg is Group Leader Human and Autonomous Decision Superiority and the Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance or ISR Theme Lead with the Next Generation Technologies Fund at DST Edinburgh.

Defence Science and Technology Symposium Program Avalon 2019

0910 Next Generation Technologies Fund – with an investment of $730 million over the decade to June 2026, the NGTF is a forward-looking program focussing on research and development in emerging and future technologies. Together with the Defence Innovation Hub and the Centre for Defence Industry Capability, these three form the integrated Defence innovation system, and are key government initiatives designed to transform future capability through partnership and innovation. Hear from Theme Leaders about their programs and how they are partnering with academia and industry.
1010 Aerospace Division Strategic Themes – an overview of AD’s research focus areas, and examples of engagement in action e.g. DST and RMIT agreement for the Structures & Materials Testing Centre.
1110 DST-Industry-Academia Workshop – an opportunity to discuss practical issues and opportunities in relation to furthering engagement with DST on aerospace related programs and research areas.
