DEFENCE COMMUNITY DOGS SUPPORTING DEFENCE PERSONNEL

The Defence Community Dogs (DCD) program gives rescued and re-homed dogs a second chance, rehabilitates inmates who train the dogs for 250 plus hours and helps Australian Defence Force (ADF) Veterans to rebuild - literally saving lives.

DCD is an independent program that provides, at no cost, highly trained Assistance Dogs to both serving and ex-serving ADF Members, who need physical and emotional support for mood, depressive and anxiety disorders; including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The team will be onsite at AVALON 2023 and located in the Defence Personnel Marquee while DCD Veterans and their dogs will be in attendance at the event on Wednesday 1 March.

Veterans who have received Defence Community Assistance Dogs have described their dogs to be a truly invaluable part of their rehabilitation; reporting improved sleep patterns, reduced episodes of stress and anxiety, reduced reliance on medication, greater independence and a renewed ability to reconnect with family, friends and within society.

DCD team Mick with his assistance dog Lola said: "It’s changed my life. It’s brought me back to the person I used to be. This program is just absolutely amazing. I wouldn’t be here today without it. Lola was one day off being euthanised and now she has saved my life."

The DCD program is fully funded by sponsorship and donations through the Defence Bank Foundation. $30,000 can sponsor a dog and veteran for the duration of their time in the program.
